The Art of Growing and Showing Clematis.
Clematis.
There are many beautiful Clematises, but the average garden contains very few of them. The best way to arrive at a just consideration of this large family is to take the five chief groups into which Clematis Plants is divided. There are many varieties in each group and they are pruned differently. It is thus important that the grower should take note of the class or type to which the varieties in his collection belong.
Probably the chief favourites among the Clematis Varieties are found in the Clematis Jackmanii class. These bear the flowers on the fresh green growth; the shoots of the current year. Pruning is carried out in the spring, and consists in cutting all growths down to within about 12 inches or 18 inches of the ground.
The Clematis plants will be forced to make vigorous new shoots, and the finer the growths the better the Clematis flowers. The best of the Clematis Jackmanii types are Clematis Jackmanii, the well known cottage garden Clematis raised in 1862 giving an immense crop of purple flowers continuously in season, the flowers generally have four sepals with dark stamens.
Clematis Jackmanii Rubra, a useful variety with crimson semi-double flowers. Late flowers are single.
Clematis Jackmanii Superba, produces fewer flowers than Clematis Jackmanii, more richly purple in bud and often having five sepalled flowers.
Clematis Madame Edouard Andre, Upward facing Clematis Flower, deep wine red flowers with cream stamens are freely produced. Sturdy but by on means overpowering in growth.
Clematis Gypsy Queen, this Clematis Varieties has large rich purple blooms, Clematis Gypsy Queen is a very robust variety, as one would expect from such an aptly named Clematis Plant. Very easy to grow.
Next in importance come the Large Flowered Premium Clematis Varieties. These large flowering Clematis varieties have there flowers borne on fresh summer growth as with the Clematis Jackmanii sorts; the flowers are larger, but they do not appear quite so freely. The pruning is done in February, and all the growths are cut down to about halfway. The Large Flowered Clematis Varieties now number in the thousands, but we will try to give a brief summery of some of the best to grow.
Beauty of Worcester, one of the most beautiful Clematis. The flowers are a rich deep blue, semi-double on the previous season’s wood during May/June, to be followed by equally attractive single flowers enhanced by white stamens, during September.
Multi-Blue, an outstanding variety of continental origin. Purple-blue flowers are fully double even when produced on young wood.
Vyvyan Pennell, Undoubtedly the most widely known and appreciated double Clematis. Colours include lavender and violet-blue with crimson shading as the flowers develop.
